Sandboarding in Florianópolis: prices, tips and experience at Joaquina dunes
About this event
If you are looking for an original activity to do in Florianópolis, sandboarding is definitely an experience worth trying. In the Joaquina dunes, the activity consists of going down sandy slopes on a board, either standing or seated, in a spectacular setting between the dunes and the ocean. Accessible even for beginners, sandboarding offers an experience that is both sporty, fun and different from the island’s more traditional activities.
How does sandboarding work?
On site, you can rent a board directly at the base of the dunes. There are usually two options available: one board for riding standing up and another for riding seated.
The activity is simple and accessible, even for beginners. After a few runs, most people quickly start enjoying the feeling of sliding on the sand.

Sandboarding prices at Joaquina
The average price is around 50 reais per board for one hour. This is usually enough time, as the activity becomes more physical than expected once you start climbing back up the dunes after every ride.
Prices may vary slightly depending on the season and tourist demand.
We did this activity at Joaquina dunes, but there are also several other sandboarding spots around Florianópolis.
What is the best time for sandboarding?
It is strongly recommended to avoid the hottest hours of the day. Under direct sunlight, the sand can become extremely hot and the physical effort much more intense, which can make the experience less enjoyable.
The best time is usually early in the morning or late in the afternoon during summer.
Outside of summer, the activity can be enjoyed almost all year round whenever the weather is pleasant. On very windy days, it may be better to postpone the activity. Strong wind quickly makes the sand uncomfortable.

A more physical activity than it seems
Going down the dunes is fun and relatively accessible, but it is important to remember that every ride requires climbing back up on foot. Between the heat and the sand, the effort is quickly noticeable.
Even if the activity looks easy at first, one hour is generally enough to fully enjoy the experience without getting exhausted.
Practical tips before going
It is recommended to bring water, a cap and sunscreen. Flip-flops are also practical for walking on the sand.
It is also important to keep your belongings safe. Keys, phones or flip-flops can easily disappear into the sand without noticing.
Sandboarding with children
Sandboarding can absolutely be enjoyed as a family activity. Young children can ride seated with a parent, while children from around 5 or 6 years old may start trying small slopes on their own.
The most important thing is to start slowly with shorter runs so they can build confidence and enjoy the experience comfortably.

A unique experience in Florianópolis
The Joaquina dunes offer an impressive landscape with huge stretches of sand and views over the Atlantic Ocean. The atmosphere is relaxed and completely different from the classic beach experience in Florianópolis.
It is a simple but memorable activity, perfect for adding variety to your trip on the island.
My opinion
Sandboarding at Joaquina is definitely one of the activities I recommend in Florianópolis. The sensations are great, the scenery is beautiful and the experience remains accessible even for beginners.
Children usually love the activity, and adults enjoy it just as much. It is the kind of simple experience that easily creates great travel memories.
After a sandboarding session, you can also continue the experience by visiting Praia da Joaquina, located just a few minutes from the dunes.
