South Floripa: Welcome to Authentic Florianópolis
People often say that Florianópolis has two faces and the South of the island is the one that hits you deep. Here, nature takes the lead, Azorean traditions are still alive, and life slows down. You discover a more authentic side of Floripa, surrounded by locals and expats from across Brazil and beyond.
1. Why the South truly stands out
The South is the most preserved part of the island, with mountains covered in Atlantic rainforest and beaches that remain wild and uncrowded. People come here to breathe, hike, and reconnect — far from the tourist buzz. Another real advantage: you’re closer to Hercílio Luz International Airport, typically just 10 to 25 minutes away depending on areas like Campeche or Ribeirão da Ilha.
2. The 3 pillars of the South
Campeche: the rising hotspot. Highly popular among expats and surfers, it offers organic cafés, surf schools, and an incredible energy. It’s the perfect balance between modern living and nature.
Ribeirão da Ilha: a journey into the past, with colorful houses dating back to the Portuguese colonial era. Here, you can enjoy some of the best oysters in Brazil while watching the sunset.
Pântano do Sul: authenticity, unfiltered. A true fishing village and the starting point for iconic hikes like Lagoinha do Leste.
3. What you need to know
The South doesn’t reveal itself easily and that’s exactly what makes it special. A single main road structures the entire area, which means traffic can slow things down during high season. The trick is simple but essential: adopt the local rhythm, leave early, plan ahead, and avoid peak hours.
The ocean here is also more raw. The water tends to be cooler, the waves stronger perfect for surfers, but something to keep in mind if you’re looking for calm waters year-round.
In reality, the South isn’t made for “consuming” Floripa, but for truly experiencing it. You trade a bit of convenience for a lot more authenticity. And if you accept that trade-off, you unlock a rarer, deeper, and far more memorable side of the island.
